Will the Cheetah break the NFL's All-Time receiving record and win MVP?
A 2x weekly newsletter dedicated to sports fans everywhere. I discuss a wide range of issues in the sports world with an emphasis on the next man up.
Friends,
Tyreek Hill is the most electrifying player in the NFL today. He stands at a modest 5’ 10” and weighs 185 pounds, and the man can fly. That’s why he’s nicknamed the cheetah. He’s a nightmare for NFL defensive coordinators, corners, and safeties all over the league. Hill is open even when he isn’t, and he automatically makes a team better just by his mere presence. All eyes are on him as soon as he steps foot on the football field.
NFL History
“Hill currently leads the NFL with 902 receiving yards this season, which means if he has 98 yards against the Patriots on Sunday, he’ll have 1,000 for the season, in Week Eight. It’s been a long time since anyone has done that. The last player to hit the 1,000-yard mark in receiving by his team’s eighth game of the season was Charlie Hennigan of the 1961 Houston Oilers in the American Football League. The only other players to reach 1,000 yards by Week Eight were Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch in 1951 and Don Hutson in 1942” (Smith, 2023).
I’ve watched a handful of Hill interviews during the offseason, and he wants the record. He believes he can do it. Before the season, I wouldn’t have given him much of a shot. But now, with 10 games left, it’s a real possibility. Tyreek Hill is a generational talent, a once-in-a-lifetime player.
MVP
I know MVPs are usually awarded to quarterbacks, as they should. Since 1957, the MVP award has gone to 42 QBs and just 18 non-QBs, Jim Brown won it three times (Nesbittandy1, 2023). But Tyreek needs to be, has to be, in the MVP discussion this year. Adrian Peterson was the last non-QB to win. In 2012, Peterson was an All-Pro running back for the Minnesota Vikings.
“Peterson is the last non-QB to win the MVP award and it took a monster season to get it done, as he finished with 2,097 yards, just nine yards short of breaking Eric Dickerson’s record in 2012” (Nesbittandy1, 2018).
I’m excited to see how the season unfolds.
Take a look at his unreal 40-yard dash time below.
